Last week, I talked about reviewing your book of business and combing for opportunities within your client base. This week, I will talk about reviewing someone’s long-term care plan.
“You talk about that all the time,” you say.
That is true. Today, however, I am making it personal. I want YOU to review YOUR plan using the Plan of Care worksheet from OneAmerica Financial. If you do not have one readily available, you can download and print it using this link.
Here is why I am doing this exercise with you. I want you to understand the importance of a plan. It’s one thing to talk about it with clients and prospects, it is another thing to take action and review your plan. So, this is where the rubber hits the road.
Trust me – this is pretty simple. The worksheet is only 2 pages and it’s a high-level plan – a baseline for how you see things play out when a long-term care situation occurs.
Remember this – if you do not take part in this exercise, you are still deciding on your plan. It is the plan of least resistance aka “the plan of hope”. Please take a few minutes and complete this exercise with your spouse.
Conduct your personal plan review
On page 1, you will articulate how you see things playing out when you require care. Don’t play the denial game and think that it won’t happen to you. Don’t play the “I’ll drive my car off a cliff” route because we all know that isn’t true. Take some time and envision how you want things playing out, who will be managing your affairs & care (it cannot be you since you are the care recipient), and where you want all this to occur.
As uncomfortable as this may have made you, the next part will make you think (and maybe make you squirm). I’ll cut right to the bone – how will you pay for your care when you need it? Seriously, if you do not have an insurance policy, what will you use to pay? Take that one step further, what impact will that have on your retirement income and legacy plans? Then take that another step further, how will that impact my spouse and family?
How are you feeling about your plan now?
Does it need to be adjusted?
What’s your next step? And, when are you going to take it?
