We are a couple weeks into long-term care awareness month which means that the holiday season is right around the corner. Why do I mention the holidays in a conversation about long-term care?
It’s because the holidays are when families come together. Children who do not see their parents on a regular basis are often surprised to see the decline of the older generation in their family (grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, siblings, etc). It is often this time when the reality of the situation takes hold and action needs to be taken.
Note, I said action not planning. In most cases, this is a reactive action because most people do not have a solid plan. In the OneAmerica Financial Consumer Survey from earlier this year, only 33% have confidence in their long-term care plan.
This is an opportunity for you to make a major impact in the lives of everyone that you know.
You are instrumental in their education and planning. But as In the OneAmerica Financial Consumer Survey shares there are more people who turn to the internet than to a financial professional (39% to 31%). Facebook, Instagram, and Tik Tok are providing planning information – often people who have zero financial knowledge are the “expert”.
We need to do better!
In June of this year, OneAmerica Financial announced a multiyear sponsorship of the PBS documentary “Caregiving” produced by Academy award nominated actor Bradley Cooper. “Caregiving” shares with you the toll (emotionally, financially, and physically) that it can have on individuals and families.

This month, make sure that you and your family have that conversation about their plan for when a long-term care situation occurs.
